Technical enquiries

Smith’s Gloucester, contracted to Brittania needed a 969m3 storm water management system for a new Tesco distribution centre in Magor, South Wales. Two of the key issues were speed of installation, and loading capacity as the system needed to be located underneath the HGV service yard.

It was decided by the design engineer and the contractor that the GEOlightTM storm water management package offered by Sustainable Drainage Systems Ltd provided the most cost effective solution in terms of performance, buildability and cost. GEOlightTM, our low-weight, modular, honeycombed structure, made from 100% recycled PVC, offers 95% water retention void, fewer distribution pipes and manholes, and also reduced excavation over other systems.

During installation it emerged that a 55 tonne piling rig had to be trafficked over the GEOlightTM system. This was achieved with no disruption to the installation or programme of works on site.

The Geomembrane and the Geotextile is laid within the excavated area.
The GEOlightTM modular blocks are rapidly and easily installed.
As part of the ongoing installation procedure, the Geotextile and Geomembrane is laid on top of the tank as it is being installed.
Pipe work is quickly installed, and backfilling begins. Diggers are able to backfill while sitting directly on the tank due to GEOlightTM's unique design and strength.
The pipe work is backfilled and wrapped in a membrane for this project, while installation and backfilling of the tank continues.
The tank is installed and backfilled within days, allowing the contractor to continue the construction of the distribution centre. Note: The tank's length spanned down the visible fence as it was a 969m3 project.
