Achilles approves SDS for complete water solutions
Leading UK provider of complete water solutions, SDS Ltd has been recognised by Achilles, the supplier management services group, as a key supplier and installer of surface water management, sustainable drainage solutions, waste water treatment and industrial cooling within the utilities industry.
Achilles offers a valuable source of current and potential suppliers through a series of inter-related services to improve the efficiency of the procurement cycle while promoting health and safety, environmental management and wider corporate responsibility. The service offered by Achilles provides buyers with supplier information for identifying and selecting potential suppliers through a pre-qualifying, evaluating and performance monitoring system.
Within the SDS Ltd group, Plastic Media Engineering manufactures and supplies plastic media products for the waste water treatment and the cooling tower industry, and has also been registered within the scheme.
Sales and Marketing Director at SDS, Richard Averley, understands the importance of being registered with Achilles to ensure a high level of service and quality is maintained for both buyers and suppliers, as he explained, “ By registering with Achilles we have joined a community of organisations within the utilities sector that place high importance on quality and corporate responsibility. Pre-qualifying for the scheme shows the high level of service, product quality and performance offered by SDS and Plastic Media Engineering. Key companies within the industry such as Scottish Water, Thames and United Utilities are all part of the Achilles scheme.”
The concept within Achilles is to standardise the process of supplier sourcing by implementing a common industry approach. Governed by a Steering Group, the community comprises representatives from all purchasing organisations.
As the only UK provider offering complete water solutions from design, consultancy and manufacture through to installation and maintenance, SDS utilises storm water management, waste water treatment, industrial cooling, sustainable drainage, hard landscaping and linear drainage systems within its portfolio.
By registering and pre-qualifying with the Achilles service, SDS will become part of an industry-wide scheme allowing Utility Sector buying organisations that subscribe to the system to access further information.

SDS Wins storm water contract for Nicolson Institute
Leading provider of stormwater management solutions, SDS, has won the contract to provide a complete stormwater attenuation and sustainable drainage system for the first hybrid public-private partnership procurement project in Scotland at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway.
The project, which is due for completion in summer 2012, is a replacement school built on the site of an existing secondary school. The new high school will provide educational facilities for over a thousand pupils and includes the refurbishment and remodelling of existing listed buildings. The project is part of the Western Isles School Project which will see the development of schools over five sites.
Supplier of construction material and services to the Outer Hebrides, Bardon Hebrides and Aggregate Industries, worked closely with SDS to improve the specification with a re-design approved by the consultant engineer, Goodson Associates. SDS has supplied and installed attenuation tanks consisting of their GEOlight units, to provide 1055m³ of surface water storage within the grounds.
The company has provided 2 separate attenuation tanks within the site of the school and offers a complete solution from design consultancy and manufacture through to installation for the project. Through careful project management SDS ensured that the project was completed on time, during one of the coldest winters on record on the Outer Hebrides.
John MacLeod from Barton Hebrides has been impressed with the company’s ability to complete the installation of the units on time and within budget despite challenging weather conditions, as he explains, “ We are extremely pleased with the service offered by SDS from the design phase through to the installation of the GEOlight units. SDS has delivered impressive results at every stage.”
