SDS supplies fully automated Grey Water On Demand Recycling Systems to deliver a consistent supply of treated grey water to meet a site’s required daily volume.

Reusing wastewater, i.e water collected primarily from appliances such as showers, baths and bathroom sinks, is a crucial part of the sustainable management of water resources and can reduce mains water consumption by up to 40%. Installing a grey water system is a great alternative to traditional sustainable measures, offering an effective solution with no reliance on rainwater. The use of grey water recycling systems also helps to reduce the impact of new developments on already stressed water supply networks.

How does it work?

Water that has been used for showering or bathing is captured and collected and, after specialised filtration, is fed back into the property for use in non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets, irrigation and laundry. Treatment is such that the filtration provides a fixed barrier to waterborne viruses and pathogens meeting required quality standards.

SDS provides the choice of two Grey Water Recycling systems which have been optimised to meet the requirements of either higher, or lower, demand volumes of water. Both systems operate on a fast treatment principle to meet demand quickly and reduce the need for large storage tanks.

Our larger scale (‘LS’) system is normally specified where demand volume exceeds around 8,000 to 10,000 litres per day, for example in an establishment such as a large hotel,  student accommodation or large residential blocks, due to the nature of their water use supply versus demand equilibrium. The system uses a disc filter and hollow fibre ultrafiltration membrane, together with oxidant and sodium hypochlorite dosing incorporating an automatic backwash process, to ensure the highest level of water quality.

Our smaller scale (‘SS’) system has been developed for use where demand is sufficiently low to render the larger system financially unviable. Installation space is typically at a premium and often involves retro-fitment to existing buildings. This system uses a cartridge filter, nanofiltration cylinders and a solid block calcium hypochlorite dosing unit, together with a booster pump, all of which are built into the single control unit to save on precious space. As with our larger scale system, the quality of treated water is comparable to drinking water.

Through our unparalleled design service, we can tailor a solution that eliminates financial and spatial barriers and delivers the most cost-effective low energy solution for each premises.

To enable a recycling system to be designed, an understanding of water supply, consumption and disposal, along with number of rooms in the property, is required. Ultimately, commercial grey water recycling systems reduce consumption and improve efficiency of water use, saving money and meeting corporate sustainability objectives.

Our ability to combine grey water and rainwater recycling in the form of a joint system, such as at London’s Southbank Place, enables our customers to satisfy even greater demands for sustainable water supply.
