Regeneration project secures future of West Midlands Town Centre

Part of a major regeneration development, the New Square project encompasses a total of 540,000ft2 and includes the design and construction of Britain’s largest Tesco store (at the time of construction) with over 140,000ft2 and 43 new retail and leisure units. The complex also includes a 5-screen cinema, seven restaurants, a petrol station and a police station as well as partially covered walkways, a new road link and numerous other support buildings and infrastructure.

SDS was commissioned by VINCI Construction UK on behalf of Tesco Stores Ltd. And worked with Pinnacle and Haskoll (architects and designers) to supply and install surface water management and sustainable drainage systems and associated paving.

The project aims to secure the long term future of West Bromwich Town Centre by providing residents of West Bromwich and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough with modern, local shopping and leisure facilities and by turning the town into a visitor destination, with a local evening economy.

With a total cost of circa £200 million the regeneration project delivers 10,000m2 of retail space in a modern, ecologically friendly environment along with the infrastructure to support this.

How it works

SDS was included in the sustainable drainage specification but worked with the design team to provide a bespoke holistic system that also incorporated the company’s landscaping products, thereby helping to reduce the overall costs to the customer and to the Council.

High customer throughput, especially in the busiest shopping periods, required that any rainwater should be dispersed swiftly and efficiently whilst still maintaining a favourable environment.

GEOlight® tanks with a combined capacity of 4,690m3 have been installed along with six Flow Control Units, five Separators and Alarms and 14,000m2 of Newgrange Flag Silver Granite paving.

This is SDS’s largest paving project to date and was successfully installed in coordination with Sandwell Council’s highways works.

Sean Delaney, VINCI Construction UK Senior Project Manager: “SDS exceeded our stringent requirements and demonstrated their proactivity, from value engineering an enhanced specification to working in close collaboration with our customers’ works teams, completing the installation within exceptionally tight deadlines.

In recent years West Bromwich town centre has undergone one of the largest regeneration programmes taking place anywhere in the West Midlands region with hundreds of millions of pounds invested from the Private and Public sectors.

What our other Customers say
