Although we are accustomed to criticising the amount of rainfall we must suffer, some parts of the UK are already listed by the Environment Agency as water scarce. Despite December 2015 being the wettest on record the longer term effects of our comparatively high levels of water abstraction have caused the EA to classify the whole southern and south east region as being under “serious water stress.”

The WMO, the UN Weather Agency, has reported the 15 hottest years in recorded history have occurred this century and this pattern is expected to continue. Whilst not so extreme in the UK, increased summer temperatures in other countries as a result of climate change will increase evaporation of water supplies.
